His entire "reign" as POTUS was about finding a staff that would fully support a power grab. Replacing chief of staff with and surrounding himself with military types - he believed that all military leaders were like Flynn, people who would turn the USA into an authoritarian regime like Putin's Russia or Xi's China, or even better yet like Kim's North Korea. He made it too easy and obvious that this was his goal, and even if they might have been leaning towards a military dictatorship the self incrimination of supporting the idiot orange Manchurian Candidate would have doomed and haunted them for the rest of their lives. The staff had too much trust in each other, having known each other for decades, they ganged up and stifled the risky moves Trump tried to order over the years.

I can see Trump lunging at some serf (as he would see the Secret Service being, his personal SS) if they didn't do his explicit command. He may be smart somewhere in there, but because he's a raging sociopath who is a power hungry idiot who has no understanding nor patience in setting up a true long term plan for taking control, he's become his own worst enemy. Hitler took 6-7 years to achieve the legislative victories that allowed him to be crowned Fuhrer, Xi has taken the better part of a decade to get the government to support his declaration of leader for life, Putin took a decade and a lot of Stalin tactics to solidify his own position including election manipulation and incarceration/assassination of political rivals. Had Trump been smarter in the long game, rewarded key people in Congress who fell in line with the program, and more patient he could have succeeded. He chooses sycophantic idiots though, people like Taylor-Greene, Gym Jordan, Matt Gaetz, Flynn, etc who get themselves in shit and would never be trusted to bring him his KFC much less any staff level appointment.

Hutchinson's testimony fits profoundly well with the description of a sociopath who feels his big opportunity slipping through his tiny fingers. Throwing shit around and screaming about firing people who won't do his bidding - all fit perfectly together and paint the best portrait of a man that people were afraid to give the brutal truth to.
